An Exploration - Gård’s 2019 Chardonnay and 2019 Chardonnay Grand Klasse Reserve

Chardonnay is a fun varietal that has been called the “winemaker’s grape”, due to its versatility and affinity for different oenological techniques that create a wide range of styles. Chardonnay can be bright, crisp and fresh with more green apple and citrus, or can also be made in a richer style with buttery, toasty notes and stone fruits or even tropical fruit flavors.

Our 2019 Chardonnay expresses bright citrus crème, brioche, honey and golden delicious apple with a caramel finish on the bouquet and palate. This wine has a nice, plush but sleek mouthfeel with great acidity. It was stirred occasionally during barrel aging and went through full malolactic fermentation, which adds to the body and mouthfeel.

The 2019 Chardonnay Grand Klasse Reserve is our reserve label Chardonnay and is produced, bottled and aged with the utmost care and strict standards to produce outstanding quality. The nose shows honeycomb, pastry and white blossoms with a silky, round palate of stone fruits, toast and citrus crème brûlée. This wine went through full malolactic fermentation, and aged in French oak.

The profiles of these Chardonnays have similarities, but the unique aspects of each shine when tasting side-by-side. The 2019 Chardonnay expresses brighter fruit characteristics with its smooth, creamy textures where the 2019 Chardonnay Grand Klasse Reserve showcases more oak integration and refinement. Both are great to pair with food! If you are having a seafood dish like crab or seared scallops, we would reach for the 2019 Chardonnay. The Chardonnay Grand Klasse Reserve would make a delicious pairing with a smoked gouda mac ‘n’ cheese dish, complementing the toasty notes in the wine.
