Mimic the warmth and coziness of a Scandinavian winter with this celebratory hot spiced wine, featuring our red blend “The Don”.
Gløgg is a traditional mulled wine infused with aromatic spices like clove, allspice, and cinnamon, and is a staple in Nordic holiday celebrations. The addition of raisins, star anise, and a hint of cardamom creates a rich, flavorful brew that is both comforting and festive. The fragrant blend of orange and apple slices adds a touch of sweetness and a burst of seasonal flavor. For an authentic Scandinavian twist, float a splash of Aquavit* on top before serving.
We got this recipe years ago from our friends at Skål Beer Hall - a Nordic-inspired gathering place in the heart of Ballard. It's been our go-to ever since. We hope you enjoy. Skål!
INGREDIENTS:
1 bottle of The Don or other dry red wine
1 tsp whole clove
1 tsp whole allspice
1-2 cinnamon sticks
Dash cinnamon
4 tbsp raisins or currants
¾ cup brown sugar
2 pods star anise
¼ tsp ground ginger
¼ tsp cardamom
½ orange, sliced in wheels
½ apple, thin sliced segments
Optional: ½ cup Aquavit*
INSTRUCTIONS:
Slowly heat all ingredients except aquavit on low heat to just below simmer for 30 min.
To serve, scoop raisins and any other tasty items you'd like from the gløgg to a mug. Add 5 to 6 oz of gløgg.
Float with up to 1 oz aquavit if using. Garnish if desired. Serve with small spoon to scoop out the raisins. Skål!
*Akvavit or aquavit (also akevitt in Norwegian) is a distilled spirit that is principally produced in Scandinavia, where it has been produced since the 15th century. Aquavit is distilled from grain and potatoes, and is flavored with a variety of herbs. Locally, aquavit can usually be found at BevMo and Total Wine, but you may want to check ahead. Or just leave it out and go with what you've got!
