Oogie Boogie Hand Pies Two Ways

Updated: 5 days ago

To celebrate spooky season and the release of our 2021 Boneyard Syrah, we conjured up five Halloween-inspired dishes to share. Have you have a chance to take a look at the first two? Each bite of this recipe series is guaranteed to send shivers down your spine and make your taste buds scream with delight! Next up, our third recipe…

Are you a The Nightmare Before Christmas fan? In the shadows of Halloween Town, Oogie Boogie lurks—a sinister sack of writhing bugs, always scheming to seize control. First emerging from the twisted mind of Tim Burton, this ghastly villain still haunts us today - now as a sinister snack!👻

These eerie hand pies come in two tantalizing variations, both of which include a pepper and blackberry jelly mix. The sweet option is then paired with creamy goat and Boursin cheeses, while the sweet & savory option features crispy bacon and sharp white cheddar. Perfect for a Halloween treat, these pies are best enjoyed with a glass of 2021 Skål Sparkling Rosé or 2021 Boneyard Syrah.

NOTE: This is recipe three in a five-part series. While each recipe can be enjoyed individually, all five served together would make for an epically eerie Halloween party!

Oogie Boogie Hand Pies Two Ways

Recipe by: Tanya Miller

Suggested wine pairings:  2021 Boneyard or 2021 Skål Sparkling Rose

Makes 5 hand pies

INGREDIENTS:

  • Refrigerated pie dough

  • 1 egg + splash of water for egg wash

  • Powdered sugar

  • Sweet filling - option 1

    • ¼-⅓ c pepper jelly

    • ⅓ c blackberry jam/jelly or enough to get desired “bloody” color

    • 4 Tbsp goat cheese

    • 4 Tbsp Garlic & Herb Boursin spreadable cheese

  • Sweet & savory filling - option 2

    • ¼-⅓ c pepper jelly

    • ⅓ c blackberry jam/jelly or enough to get desired color

    • 6 slices bacon, cooked until crispy and finely chopped or crumbled and cooled

    • ½ c sharp white cheddar, shredded

SPECIAL TOOL:

Use our very professional looking (😂) Ooogie Boogie template if you like. Just print the pdf at 100% for the correct sizing!

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Combine jellies together in a small bowl and microwave for 10-15 seconds or until you can mix them together easily. Refrigerate to cool.

  2. For sweet hand pies: Gently warm and combine the goat and Boursin together in a microwavable bowl for about 15-20 sec. Mix thoroughly. Let cool.

  3. Roll out one pie crust according to package directions to a 12-13 inch roundish shape, depending on the size of your ghost template. We were able to carefully fit five on one sheet of crust. Trace the template with a paring knife and once you’ve cut it out, place on a parchment lined baking sheet and cover with plastic wrap or damp flour sack towel so they don’t dry out.

  4. Roll out the second pie crust and cut out the top layer of the ghost. Cut out the eyes and mouth to the desired face. Once you’ve cut them out, place on a parchment lined baking sheet and cover.

  5. Assembly: Place ~1 Tbsp jelly mixture on the bottom ghost layer, focusing more in the mouth area and spread the rest leaving a slight border jelly-free if possible. Repeat this process with the rest of them.

  6. For sweet hand pies: Place approx 1 Tbsp of goat cheese mixture in the belly of the bottom ghost layer. Repeat until all bottom layers are “filled”.

  7. For sweet & savory hand pies: Place approx 1 Tbsp each of bacon and white cheddar to fill the belly area. Preheat the oven to 400°.

  8. Whip up the egg and water and brush along the edge of your bottom ghost. Lay the top piece on the bottom piece and haphazardly seal the edges by pressing down with the tines of a fork. If desired, with the paring knife you can cut into the top crust for a more exaggerated ghoulish look. This is not about perfection here!

  9. Bake for about 15 min until a light golden brown. Garnish with a dusting of powdered sugar before serving.

  10. Enjoy with a chilled glass of Skål or the one and only Boneyard!
